It’s easy to become entrapped in a cycle of negativity. Negative thoughts and energy, just like positive thoughts and energy, are literally contagious and they multiply. But any cycle of negativity can be transformed into a positive one by making the choice to do so and then intently focusing on it.

Recognizing a negative situation is the first step to finding your way back to positivity. Assess if the people around you are focusing on trouble without looking for solutions. If you start to see anger and resentment are taking up too much space in your relationships, it’s probably time to take a break and work on training your brain to get back to thinking positive thoughts. Try setting some boundaries! You don’t have to answer every phone call, message or text. Give yourself some space to get your mind back to a calm, centered place.

Never let yourself feed into their negativity. It can be very difficult not to take on other people’s emotions, but if you are able to train yourself to give only objective answers, it becomes easier to maintain control over your own feelings.

Sometimes, our own thoughts are too negative and need to be worked on. Try stepping back from unproductive thoughts and look at each concern objectively. Are you worrying about things you have no control over? If you are, it’s time to let it go. Some people find it helpful to write their worries on a piece of paper and throw it away (or shred it!). Symbolically, it can help your brain to separate from that concern and remind you that we can all solve some things, but none of us can solve everything. Breaking a negative cycle of thinking does not happen overnight, but if you keep training your brain to let go of the things you can’t change and look for solutions for the things you can, you will find yourself seeing much more of the sunshine and good around you. You may even find you’re making the people around you feel happier!

Human beings are not meant to only survive, we are here to thrive in the life we’re in. We’re here to lift each other up and celebrate each other. Living in negativity will never let you be the joyful person you are meant to be.
